- Each fork-lift truck should be committed to a specific driver (or to a team, if operation is in two or three shifts who should be responsible for its correct operation and maintenance.
- A malfunctioning truck should be prevented from operation. Before each shift the driver should check the working order of the steering system, braking system, hydraulic system, lifting gear and light and sound signals.
- After initial engine start, the driver should bleed the steering system by turning the steering wheel several times in both directions.
- Smoking or administering alcohol or drugs by the driver during operation is strictly forbidden.
- It is forbidden to distract the driver's attention during truck operation.
- It is forbidden to transport or handle loads which exceed the rated .lifting capacity of the truck or which are improperly loaded
- It is forbidden to handle loads which are not placed in accordance with the truck load diagram.
- It is forbidden to drive a truck with wet or oily hands.
- The truck driver should perform only operations corresponding to the truck design and purpose.
- If replaceable working attachments are used, these should be securely fixed.
- It is forbidden to increase the truck lifting capacity by adding counterweights or using people as counterweight, or by any other alterations deteriorating the truck stability.
- Personnel are not allowed to: mount and stand on the truck body during operation stand under the fork arms (or the attachment working organ) or stay near a lifted load.
- Staying or passage of people near the loading or unloading site is forbidden.
- It is forbidden to lift or lower loads using the truck, if:
- the necessary fork arm clearance is not provided under the load;
- the parking brake is not activated;
- the fork arms are not symmetrically placed in relation to the base plate;
- the load is not balanced or is not secured against slipping out of place.
- The driver is not allowed to leave the truck while the load is lifted up.
- Picking up loads with the fork-lift truck should take place under observing the following rules:
- the fork arms should be at a maximum distance from each other, taking into account the configuration of the lifted load;
- there should be enough space to insert the fork arms under the load until the palette (load) hits the fork base; if palettes of a smaller size are handled, care should be taken not to catch the palettes situated behind the load.
- Before picking up load from a rack (or stack) the truck should be brought close to the rack (stack) to a distance of 0.1 m, and the parking brake should be activated.
- After picking up a load or without load, the fork must be lowered to a transport clearance of 0.3 m above ground surface.
- Before each moving-off the driver must make sure there is free space for truck movement and then move off smoothly.
- Lifting, lowering and tilting the lifting gear with load should be performed smoothly, without thrusts.
- When handling off-gauge load, the driver must make sure that passage height and width are sufficient for safe movement.
- When handling explosion-hazardous and flammable materials which require additional caution, the driver should receive preliminary specific safety instructions from his immediate chief.
- When handling bulky loads restricting visibility, movement should be reverse When moving forward, a second person should show the way and ensure safe movement.
- Before leaving the truck, the driver should: make sure all command levers are in neutral position, pull the handbrake, shut off the engine and take the ignition key with him. If the truck is parked on a slope, its wheels must be wedged.
- When parking the truck, the driver should make sure that the machine is not restricting the access to emergency exits, stairs or fire extinguishing equipment.
